River Scribbles - Severn Moods
The weather was overcast and the sky threatening which made our visit to the Severn all the more interesting. Sometimes the the water is a torrent and sometimes calm. Today the water was glassy which enhanced the reflections and made for interesting sketches. I used watercolours to splash the image onto the paper and then apply oil paints that rub into the surface. Pencil marks are applied too and this happily sits on the oil painted surface. Colour swatches are made so I can take back to the studio (I find photographs just not good enough to record colour and distance). After the dribbles and smudges of paints are dry, the sewing machine comes out. Straight stitches are sewn back and forth following the patterns of the paint and so adding highlights. I particularly like the swirls of the trees and leaves.
You might have guessed I had great fun with this River series and I know it won't be the last of them.
